Three Ways Volunteering as a Company can Benefit Your Business

Most businesses offer their employees some sort of paid time off incentive, as it has been proven to increase not only recruitment and retention rates but also the quality of talent you can bring into your organization. However, in recent years there has also been an influx in offering volunteer time off. On paper, it might seem like it defeats the purpose of volunteering if you pay your employees to do it, but I’m here to explain why doing so is actually in the best interest of your company, let alone your community. It doesn’t matter if you’re picking up trash on the highway, serving at a local soup kitchen, or planting trees in a nearby park. Whatever you do will help grow and cultivate both your employees and the public image of your company. 

1. Benefit Your Employees

A business is only as strong as the people who work there, so keeping your employees happy is vital for success. Volunteering is known to increase self-confidence, provide a sense of purpose, combat depression, and help individuals stay physically and mentally healthy. By breaking up the monotony of your employees’ daily routine to volunteer, you will ultimately increase their productivity and work ethic. Furthermore, this is a great opportunity for team building and interdepartmental cooperation. Coworkers that might never interact at the office will have a chance to build relationships and bring unity to the workplace. 

2. Build and Reveal Skills

In addition to building relationships within your company, your employees will also build skills. Doing the same work every day can put even the most hard-working person on auto-pilot, so having them focus on problem-solving in a new environment will help stimulate their minds and allow them to learn new skills. What’s more, you might notice certain employees have a knack for leadership when the hierarchy of the job is dismantled and everybody is working on the same level. Perhaps an employee from one department exhibits skills that suggest she would excel in another position. Keep an open mind and you might be surprised at what you can learn about the people who work for you. 

3. Improve your Public Image

As an added bonus, companies that provide volunteer opportunities for their employees look great to the public eye. It doesn’t matter if you’re a manufacturing company, a nursing home, or in the foodservice industry, if you give to your community it will likely return the favor. Plus, having this rapport with your community will not only attract more clients and customers but also more job seekers. 

When it comes down to it, providing volunteer time off for your employees is a win-win-win situation. Your community benefits, of course, but so do your employees and your business, all at the cost of a half-days work.
